A Rough 24 Hours
As I’m writing this Riot is chilling at TLC Emergency vet in Leesburg. We’re keeping our fingers crossed he continues to improve overnight.
Last night shortly after we got home around 8, Riot threw up his dinner. He vomited 6 more times before 10 when I called Blue Ridge. We took him out there, they did an x-ray and didn’t see any obstructions so they gave him fluids, something to help with nausea and some pepcid and sent us home. He had vomited one more time on the way to the vet, once as we were leaving, and for the last time at 11:30. He continued to feel nauseous and wanting to go outside every 20-30 minutes until sometime after 2. This whole time he was drooling excessively and very lethargic.
He had finally settled down enough around 2:30 or so that I decided to head to bed. He work me up around 3:30. I thought he might get sick again, but he just burped and settled back down. By 5 o’clock I was up with him. By this time, he’d settle into a spot and wouldn’t move. It took a lot of coaxing to get him to get up.
I spent the early part of the morning debating calling Blue Ridge back or waiting to go to our usual vet. Since he really didn’t seem any worse than last night I waited and called our normal vet. We got an appointment for 10:30 and had more x-rays and blood work done. Other than an elevated white blood cell count, his blood work was fine. Around 1, the vet and I decided it was better to take him to TLC for fluids and monitoring than to bring him home and wait and see.
So off to TLC in Leesburg we headed. When we got there, Riot actually stood up for me when I came to get him out of his crate. And there was a little bit of tail wagging in the waiting room. Since then Riot has been hanging out at TLC, getting fluids, having an ultrasound (since a blockage or foreign body still can’t be completely ruled out), and hopefully getting better.
The results of the ultrasound didn’t show anything abnormal. Things still seem to be moving slower than they should be, and he still had diarrhea. But he’s perked up some and even wagged his tail on his last walk. They’re keeping him overnight continuing fluids and medication and monitoring him. Depending on how he’s doing tomorrow, he might get to eat.
We’re crossing our fingers it’s just a really bad, really expensive case of gastroenteritis.
